Not for what I'm doing. Pages strikes me as something for newsletters, not writing well-researched articles and novels.

    Not true

I used Pages to do a college term paper which was over 40 pages long. My lecturer commented it was the best presented he had seen for years.

Perhaps the issue people are having with Pages is that it looks too easy compared to Word and that confuses them. You really do need to use Pages as a Word replacement to appreciate how good is actually is.

    iWork '07 will be great.

Okay, they fixed the Portal, so I was able to download it, a 79.4MB file, lets see how this runs compared to parallels.
Post screenshots if you can! :)

Is this for Intel Macs only or will it work on PPC too?

Intel Macs only. I'm pretty confident that anything involved with running Windows on a PPC Mac is dead by now

I'm not sure if it's just a bunch of "computer guys" around here, but in the gaming world Xbox 360 has a fair amount of cultural cachet. It's not my cup of tea, but it's pretty dang popular with youth culture. Microsoft already has a highly successful, profitable, and critically lauded online service in Xbox Live, with millions of subscribers.

I think it's a bit of wishful thinking to claim MS will "screw this up", since the infrastructure is already there, and it's already functioning in a lot of young people's homes.

Look, I'm the biggest Apple fan I know, but Microsoft has proven over and over that they can move into an arena with another market leader and chip away. They lost hundreds of millions on the Xbox, and went right ahead and made a successor. They don't care if they lose some money, because eventually, they will make money.

I would love to see iPod continue its success, but, aside from a current lead in marketshare, Microsoft has a lot going for it this time around.

    YOUTH CULTURE

Where has it gone, withered on the vine ??? the USA's YC used to rule the world ?? Now PC is the only thing the comes close to ruling the world ?

It's would be fun if Microsoft released this player and Apple introduced the rumored full screen iPod a few days later..

They could have avoided all this drama by just not announcing the white iPhone until it was ready, but noooo.

If no one knew it was planned, there wouldn't have been all this bitching, and Apple could have surprised us with it.

If true, it could be absolutely huge. Truly landmark. Imagine if Apple could somehow do the the TV industry what they did to nearly every other industry (segment) they're in?

The possibilities are pretty astounding. This is the Apple of folks. They have the money, drive, talent and momentum to get into any market and shake things up with a very good chance of success, and make the established players look totally flat-footed in the process.

We should let the NUMBERS (or $$$) speak for themselves.
Absolutely not likely to happen. It will happen only if they somehow price the TV at say like $500.

Apple seems to be really enjoying making people buy new iphone/ipad every 1 or 2 years. At $500 or so, it's easier for consumers to swallow. And the consumer knows he/she will spend a lot of time using it.

At $1000 - $2000 (TV with profit margin Apple likes), # of people willing and able to pay that every 1 - 2 years goes down alot.

And let's not forget Apple won't enter a market if they don't get to have a huge profit margin.

Don't mean to be a wet blanket, but I didn't care about Apple's market share when it was slipping in the 90s and I don't care about it now that it's climbing. I didn't buy my Mac to be popular and I don't particularly care that lots of people are (or are not) using them. It's just an irrelevant metric to me.
    ...
Besides, Apple deals in the kind of quality that will keep it around for many, many years, regardless of which way its market share is going and that's all that I care about.

You do realize that if Apple's marketshare were to drop to, say, 1% or lower, they would have very little money to spend on R&D, and the quality and innovation you seek would suffer tremendously? Which is why Apple was doing dismally in the 90's and is doing much better today. They are now flush with cash, and can pump out great hardware products, and develop and refine the software that drives sales. Market share (and high margins) is important to ensure a steady flow of cash for those projects.

So, you don't care about how market share affects you, but if you were the only Mac user, I assure you, Apple wouldn't be manufacturing products just for your puny market share. (To make an extreme example)

I bought an iMac April 16. If apple releases a new model May 3rd, will they pity recent buyers and allow exchange/return for the new iMac????

You have until the 30th to return it with the 14 day return policy so I would return it now and just buy the new one when it comes out

Really? People downing the product already before we even know what it's going to have? Really?
Or are there people just trolling for a response?

...way too premature for a stupid comment like "matte finish or fail". Yeah, they rake in $16 billion a year, I am sure they will be bankrupt before the year is out if they dont have a matte iMac..... LMAO

Some actor guy, who by an incredible coincidence has the same name you do. Then again, you were no doubt born Charlie Sheen while he was born Carlos Estevez, so you're the real Charlie Sheen and he's just pretending. :p

Nice update. Some really nice to have features, but I'm not totally depressed about buying my 2.16ghz MBP 3 months ago (not that I could have waited, really).

be satsisfied with what you have when you needed it... i got my 17" MBP only 3 weeks ago with no regrets and i love this thing, i don't need all that's there in the update, what i have now will suffice until the next time i need a new computer :D :D :D

    It hasn't been fixed.

well it's kinda weird - ip4 is fast enought to have NO animation problems. This started exacly the same as 3G problems on iOS3.x.

In a few months we all know that ip4 is too slow, too old and we would need to switch to ip5 :/

it is sad to see that Apple don't care about performance anymore...

I've got a question for you guys. Any of you Mac users that also run Windows on a box somewhere:

Are any of you really going to upgrade to Vista when it comes out? or are you going to wait at least a year?

It would be interesting to compare Fibre Channel with Thunderbolt. Apart from TB integrating video, TB looks a lot like an evolution of Fibre Channel.

Hum, you have no idea what Fiber channel is if you seriously claim that. Fiber channel is a networking protocol for storage essentially, Thunderbolt is a host based technology. Call me when Thunderbolt can be switched, redundant, do LUN provisioning and can be extended over a MAN to offer multi-site storage.

Even though they had their most successful quarter, overly high expectations and a US economic recession is the reason. It's expected, the whole market is in decline.

Does anyone know if the home sharing play count bug has been fixed? I'd upgrade if it has but if it hasn't I'll stick with my 4.3.1 jailbreak.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about there was a bug where home sharing to device was not updating song play counts in iTunes like it's suppose to.

    It's not a bug.

You had to manually tick a box which counted Home Sharing play counts on the iTunes overall one.
