Probably saw the writing on the wall with Apple's recent 'Post-PC' direction, even more so with iOS's impending infiltration of Mac OS.

In doing some research, I found out that the basic Pioneer DVR-111 series SuperDrives Apple uses (some G4/all G5/all Intel towers) have the hardware capability to do LabelFlash direct-to-disk-surface label burning with the compatible disks. LabelFlash is the NEC-originated competitor to LightScribe, does basically the same thing on LightScribe-compatible disks.
On the Windows side, there are lots of sites out there that talk about flashing the ROMs to enable the feature for certain revision letters & firmware versions of the DVR-111 drives, while other versions of the drive (DVR-111L) are already fully capable (no clue on the ones Apple shipped with the Macs -- I stopped paying attention when I found there were ZERO software apps to support it on the Mac side that I could find).

Personally, I would really like to see Apple provide the feature as an OS-bundled utility app or added-feature in an existing Apple burner app (like the one in the iLife bundle).

As of March '05, Roxio also said they were going to support LightScribe (and possibly LabelFlash) in their future Mac releases, but I didn't see any mention of it in the feature sets of Toast & Toast Titanium 6 & 7, both of which were either updated or released after that date. Theoretically, they could also support LightScribe (if licensed) to burn images into unused portions of the dataside (as could any other burner app), to create a label effect (see http://www.yamahamultimedia.com/yec/tech/discta2_01.asp for details on the technology).

The epson CD-printer solution seems a bit silly for my uses, if I have no other use for the printer, mostly because of the consumables costs (and, indeed, with a big HP laser color printer here, I have zero other use for the Epson and am not thrilled by their putty-style inks and subsequent print head maintenance/cleaning processes that waste a goodly chunk of the ink reservior).

As for the sharpie comments, I create CD's & DVD's for clients and would prefer to present a more "professional image" on the disks than hand-written solutions. I was printing color labels through my laser printer and setting them in (usually using Avery CD labels), but some of the clients, esp. those with very thin portables seemed to be having issues with the thicker disks as a result, so I went back to sharpies as a general rule. The ability to do LabelFlash disks with hardware I already own would be great...

    Cheers,
    =-= The CyberPoet

    most ignorant statement ever.

You might think my comment was stupid, or perhaps ludicrous, but please explain to me what about it was ignorant?

It's good, got my first one last week. It does get hot, really hot, but it's best interface I have ever heard. Going to add some heat sinks to the chips, that will help. Perfect timing with Pro Tools 9.

It is seeming more and more likely that enhanced interrogation techniques (a.k.a. torture), provided information that allowed the U.S. to kill O.B.L.

I recall many on this forum criticizing these techniques claiming they never provided useful information.

    What say you now??

Personally, I was in favor of using these methods on prisoners that were known terrorists, such as K.S.M.

I'm very happy that Apple has finally muzzled their suppliers.

These "sources" should not be revealing parts, and dates, and production info. Given the identical circumstances that occurred prior to the iPad 2 launch, I'd say it's quite obvious that Apple has finally reigned in the leaks.

It was getting very embarrassing that super-secret Apple with their Gestapo tactics, was unabe to keep 95% of the details of new products a secret, because some shmuck in some factory has Internet access.

My first computer had a tape drive. A Commodore Vic 20. I wonder how long a cassette tape needs to be to hold a TB not to mention a PB?

The Datasette transferred around 50 bytes per second.

    1 TB = 1099511627776 bytes

    1099511627776/50 ~ 21,990,232,556 Seconds or 366,503,876 Minute etc...

    synergy ( http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/)
Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It's intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s).
thx to markoibook for directing my attention to it in this (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=110561) thread.

Yeah I know Apple's policy on low pricing to sell hardware and I think it's brilliant.
I'm not complaining. On more than one occasion they forced the competition to offer more for less in order to compete and that's a great thing from a consumer perspective.

I don't know why they drop the software after a while though, discontinuing Shake didn't make any sense.
I think once Apple saw just how deep down the post production rabbit hole they'd have to go to meaningfully support and develop Shake they decided it would be too much effort for too little return so bye-bye Shake. It was too much of a niche w/in a niche for Apple, IMO.

If Apple thought they'd be able to come in and over throw the Android strong hold on Verizon someone needs to go back and do some more market analysis. With such a wide variety of Android phones for Verizon, how did Apple expect they were going to be able to sell such large numbers and with an older to boot. Somone(s) got a little over zealous with their estimates and I bet they're hearing about it now.

Sorry if this posted in the wrong forum, I'm not sure where to post it.

Starting today I'm getting an annoying popup only on Macrumors

It's kinda purpleish, doesn't make sense, say's "collective media" on the first line. No Idea what it is but I don't like it.
If this stays, I will frequent Macrumors far less.

    How do I stop it?

Actually it is not just on Macrumors , also happening on CNN.com

Pretty amazing considering the date and cost....

Much more interested in this sort of solution over the typical enterprise that simply phones up a vendor and orders a SAN.
