What a sensationalistic headline about SJ being eligible for a $37 refund from the state of CA. Nothing but link bait.

Oh really? Care to enlighten me then grand wizard. You show me sources that broadcast in the deep color realm (30,36,48-bit color depths), and THEN you show me the displays that support that color depth. Why do you think there is such a big argument amongst displays/component manufacturers on the merits of HDMI 1.3. If Anthem, the maker of my $6500 Statement D2 video processor, didn't feel it was necessary to add 1.3 support, then I think that's a pretty good indication of the progress of deep color support. HDMI is the same exact thing in terms of video transport as DVI - smaller connector, with a different pin mapping.

8-bit(24bit) is plenty, for a long time.
...and besides, this discussion was about DisplayPort and it's usefulness, when we already have HDMI. Maybe you don't know so much about topic discussion.
I thought that this thread is about ACDs and I believe that they are primarily used other than watching broadcast tv.
There are already displays with xvYCC and it's gamut is so big that 8-bit colors will show banding. 8-bits are enough for ntsc gamut, but not bigger.
Next versions of bd / hd-dvd specs will include xvYCC and h.264 broadcasts will probably use xvYCC also in the future.
ACDs are also used a lot in professional video post production and there is need for more than 8-bit colors. Also high quality photography needs more than 8-bits. All DSLRs have had deeper color depth than 8-bits from day one.
8-bits is enough when display's real contrast ratio is about 300:1, but when we already have displays that have contrast ratio way beyond that, there is banding on a carefully profiled display. 256 brightness levels just isn't enough. That's why sdi has had 10-bits for a decade.
So there really is need for more than 8-bits with displayport or any other way. Even average consumers will notice that within a lifetime of a new ACD.
When I buy expensive high quality devices like displays, I want them to be high quality at least half of their life, not just now.

Hi, I will not be camping out, however I am disabled and wonder if their nwill be a (special Line) for people that have disabled (PLACARDS). Also, does anyone know how long the pre reservation lines will be and how fast they will move, base on like (person #43) who is in line? Also, my reservation says 7 am, but could there be like a 1000 customers in the reservation line at 7 am? I'm just trying to get a (CLEAR UNDERSTANDING) of how long I will be in line because of my disability. Please let me know from past experiance.
thanks, purplestigers:apple:
Spoke with the apple store today. They will have 2 lines one for reservations and one for non reservations. I asked about disabled people. The rule is you must wait in the line. But they said they would be more than happy to help you any way they could. The mall is not going to let us line up until like 5am. In the past when apple opens the doors the lines are fairly long. I have seen them stretch all the way from the apple store down towards Macy's. I'd say at 7am there will be at least 50 non reservation people in line and more than that in the reservation line. I cant really speculate how fast the line will move since the farthest back i have ever been in line was 8. My suggestion would be to have someone wait in line for you and then when the store is about to open go meet up with them. Good luck. Lets us know how it went. :-)

Am I the only person around here who doesn't see an issue with scratches on this (or for that matter the current iPods)?
I know the plastic scratches, but does that honestly affect your use or viewing at all? The few scratches that are on my 5.5G iPod (and before that, my nano) have absolutely no effect on my viewing of the display whatsoever? If the backlight is off, or you hold it at a weird angle maybe, but otherwise who cares? Why do phones and iPods and other handhelds always have to look shiny new?
I personally scuff up my sneakers and jeans as soon as I buy them. Same idea here... I kinda like when stuff is broken in. Feels better to me. If it affected viewing in some way I would understand, but it really doesn't?

Whole disk encryption and ssd's do not match. Ssd's will become a lot slower when you fill them which is exactly what whole disk encryption does. Buying an ssd would be a waste of money, you're better off with a much cheaper hdd.
Eh, not entirely true in practice. I bit-locker by Windows drive on my laptop (SSD) and its still waaay faster then a traditional HDD.
There is also SafeGuard from Sophos that does full-disk on OSX.

I think if you still have a 3GS, you should bump to an iPhone 4. If you have an iPhone 4 I would stick with it til ver 6. I agree with what this report is saying. The faster processor and camera will most likely make it's way to the phone, but Apple will likely stop there and wait for a screen size improvement for a later version. Apple is not known for just upgrading all of a device's components at once. They tinker with a couple things and slap a new version number. It's what happened with the iPad2. Many expected a higher res screen, but that would have been too many component upgrades.

Growth stocks don't generally pay dividends. Dividend paying stocks are a safety move, trading dividends for share price growth, and are meant to attract investors. Apple doesn't need to do that.
Be happy with the insane growth. It has a 315 billion market cap, it's not "growing" to $1 trillion, sorry. Apple is a mature company.

Yes, how did you work that out? I've been in Australia for months and I've pleaded with Rogers to unlock my phone while I'm here. They refuse to do it unless I pay $400 to end my contract and another $100 for the unlock. I've been using Rogers for over 8 years and they still won't help me out.
Never again will I use another Rogers service after this whole fiasco. They are a bunch of jerks.
They seem to be better than AT&T here in USA, :p, at least you have the option of an official unlock.

That's what I just did. The screen alone is worth the upgrade. I no longer feel bad about not necessarily getting the 5 and skipping that version and getting the 6 next year.

The cell companies lobbied HARD to not allow you to keep your number when you switch. The state legislature here (Calif) buckled 3 times.
You can thank "the government" for allowing you to keep your number when you switch. You can also thank "the government" for demanding that the companies improve their 911 protocols. People were sometimes
waiting 20 minutes to get connected. Also, blame "the government"
for requiring that the companies allow you a grace period to return your phone. They actually had to create a bill called "the cell phone bill of rights"
These actions did not create a huge costly layer of bureaucracy. Why do people think that corporations should be allowed to abuse people unhindered? After-all the market was/is not providing that many real choices. It's a cartel.
Bye the way, "the government" (in theory) is you.
We are lucky that sometimes government works for us. The state government here bowed to the mobile phone companies when municipalities wanted to enact laws banning using a phone while driving. They banned anyone but the state being able to create any laws concerning mobile phones.
Of course, I wouldn't want the government to have their own company--that would be haphazard and bizarre, though I don't think anyone would buy service from them, suspecting wire(less) tapping on all of their phones.

Who here saw "Commander in Chief"? I thought it was incredibly well written, Geena Davis did an amazing job, as did Donald Sutherland. I think if they continue on the path they were on tonight, addressing the types of issues a female president would encounter, rather than skirting them, it could be a very compelling drama.
Any thoughts?

Is there a website where I can go and download (for free) all of the commercials that Apple has ever had? I remember a cool iPhoto commercial with a newborn baby in the hospital, and his/her dad was taking pictures of him/her and using iPhoto to create a slideshow or something...Anyways, is there such a site? Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure Jobsy hasn't done a "One More Thing" (which is annoying, cos even ppl who've noticed this still hope for them) since they did an event actually called "One More Thing" about 2 years ago. Last Macworld's keynote was just about the AppleTV (which we'd heard about 3 months previous as the iTV) and of course the iPhone, with no OMT whatsoever.
I think they scrapped it because internet hype and Thinksecret's rumour success rate meant that the "One More Thing" was usually leaked beforehand anyways, so when they did it, it was less of a nice surprise and more of a relief that the rumour sites hadn't gotten our hopes up about nothing.

Hmm, I hope this doesn't sound really dumb - when I clicked on the drop down menu for "Import Using," .AAC was not an option. The three options were MP3, AIFF, or WAV.
I'm confused.

Please DON'T give me the answer on this problem but help me understand the question better. It is a take home quiz due tomorrow.
I don't know what a 'subscript' is that it refers to in this T or F Question.
Q: " An Array is a collection of elements of the same type referenced by a single name and one or more SUBSCRIPTS. The SUBSCRIPTS may be of different types as long as they are ordered. True or False"
Thanks,
-Lars
